Getting food stamps for the first time:
In order to get food stamps in Alabama, you must meet the general Federal eligibility requirements, which include:
- You must have a Social Security Number or apply for one.
- You must be a U.S citizen, U.S. national, or have qualified alien status.
- You must register for work if between the ages of 18 and 50, which may include an employment training program. (Some college students may be eligible as well.)
Beyond the basic requirements, eligibility for food stamps depends on income. You can see the income limits for eligibility here.
To find out for sure if you qualify, the next step should be to contact Alabama’s Food Assistance Division, which administers the SNAP food stamps program. You can apply for food stamps online once you’ve registered with MyAlabama.gov. Or you can print out a food stamps application and mail or bring it to the closest Food Assistance office (click here to find offices).
