Medi-Cal is the name of the Medicaid program in the state of California. It is health insurance that offers free or discounted medical services for children and adults (including pregnant women and disabled people) with limited income.
Determining your eligibility for Medi-Cal is not easy. Covered California offers an online tool you can use to estimate whether you are covered, but even if the calculations seem to indicate that you’re not eligible and you feel you could be, or if the tool is confusing to you, the best thing to do is simply to apply and have someone with greater knowledge of the system determine what Medicaid benefits you might be eligible for.
You can apply in a number of ways:
- Online: Go to http://www.coveredca.com/apply/ and you’ll see an Apply Now button to get you started.
- In Person: Visit your county social services office. A list of office locations is here.
- By Mail: Fill out an application (in English or other languages) and send it to your county’s social services office or to Covered California, P.O. Box 989725, West Sacramento, CA 95798-9725.
- By Phone: Call your county’s social services office to apply over the telephone.
